THERE THEY were again, Big B and him, making the same trip through the streets of Honolulu to reach the dojo. And if Brendan had been concerned the first time, he was fucking vibrating with worry this time.
Knowing Kinosuke—and the man’s pride—it would have taken all but a tsunami alert for him to call Brendan after what had happened, and in less than twenty-four hours too.
Had Senator Harris decided keeping his son away from the yakuza wasn’t enough, that he had to erase the threat once and for all? However conveniently far from the mainland Hawaii was, it still was US territory, so the man had to be careful about who he hired and what for if he didn’t want an even bigger scandal hanging over his head. And yet it was obvious the senator had contacts in the private military sector—he’d hired two ex-SEALs first and then a bunch of what looked like ex-government agents—and it was not too absurd to think he might even be able to pull some strings with Homeland Security. A new yakuza gang settling in Hawaii would no doubt capture the attention of a number of agencies, from the DEA to the ATF.
Brendan felt the reassuring pressure of the Glock against the small of his back and pictured the dojo in his mind, focusing on the best way to surprise anyone who might have made their way in.
Planning always calmed him, grounded him, maybe because it offered a semblance of control over the events that allowed him to believe he could influence the outcome. But it was difficult to keep the image of Kinosuke in danger from interfering with his thinking.
“They aren’t defenseless civilians, you know,” Big B said, as if reading his mind, though Brendan didn’t think he was doing such a good job with his poker face.
“Yeah,” he agreed. “They’re not your usual clueless goons.”
He remembered the way Shinya, the one with the awful scar, had been about to pound B to the ground—and it took a lot to outmaneuver a SEAL.
“And it’s a good sign that Kinosuke has been able to use his phone,” B insisted and Brendan almost laughed. Funny that one of his men had to reassure him, when he was supposed to be the one on top of things—or at least had been supposed to not that long ago.
He told himself this was the chance he’d been waiting for, a way to do something with a purpose he understood and approved of from beginning to end. Yeah. He could do this, and do it well because he had the training, the experience, and the guts to succeed.
“Did you sneak in through Matsunaga’s garage to plant the cameras?” he asked B, already focused on the action ahead.
B smirked, recognizing a fellow predator on the prowl. “Nah, I tampered with Kotaro’s window the first time so it could be opened from the outside.”
Brendan shook his head. “You lazybones.”
“Yup, dat’s me, da lazy moke.”
He snorted, feeling his tension recede to a point where it would only help to keep him alert, not hinder his every movement.
